In Malaysia, GSC has 352 screens across 37 locations in Malaysia, including the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Ipoh, Seremban, Melaka, Kuantan, Mentakab, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, and Kuching. The Group also has 98 screens in 16 locations in Vietnam through a partnership with Galaxy Studio, which – combined with its operations in Malaysia – brings its footprint to a total of 450 screens in 53 locations across both countries.
An enriching world of cinema experiences
A pioneer of cinema technology, GSC prides itself on innovation and in delivering many new and enriching cinema experiences to audiences in Malaysia. Currently, it manages the largest multiplex in Southeast Asia – the 21-screen GSC Mid Valley Megamall, which is home to the first Onyx Cinema LED Screen in the country and also the region’s only 3D cinema LED screen. Showcasing greater detail and colour vibrancy in cutting-edge 4K, Onyx Cinema LED is capable of capturing the most pristine whites and deepest blacks with a nearly infinite contrast ratio, and is one of the many innovations that GSC has introduced to the local cinema circuit over the last three decades.
In 2013, it was the first cinema operator to launch Dolby Atmos, which is now available in more than 20 GSC locations. GSC then launched the nation’s first D-BOX motion seats, which offers perfectly synchronized motions with movie scenes, at GSC 1 Utama in 2014. The feature has since been extended to over 13 cinemas nationwide.
Expanding on immersive cinematic experiences, GSC later launched the world’s leading 4D cinematic technology, 4DX in 2017. Developed by South Korea’s CJ 4DPLEX, 4DX brings the movies to life with over 20 signature effects delivered through vibration and motion-activated seats, as well as environmental effects like wind, fog, rain, lightning, and scents. 4DX is now available in in GSC Paradigm JB, GSC 1 Utama Shopping Centre and GSC IOI City Mall, Putrajaya. It will soon be available in GSC Southkey, Johor Bahru.
The partnership with CJ 4DPLEX led GSC to then introduce the country’s first ScreenX theatre – a multi-projection theatre that allows a 270-degree panoramic movie experience. By utilising a proprietary system to expand the screen to the side walls, audiences can go beyond the traditional movie frame with surrounding imagery that gives a sense of being inside the movie. ScreenX is now available at GSC 1 Utama, and will be rolled out in stages to other cinemas around the country.
When it comes to halls and screens, GSC owns some of the largest cinema screens in the country with GSC Maxx, its proprietary premium large format screen, which is available in GSC MyTOWN, GSC IOI City Mall, GSC Ipoh Parade, and GSC Paradigm JB. For families looking to spend quality time, there is PlayPlus – a family-friendly hall crafted to meet the needs of children and the young at heart, giving them a place to watch a movie, play and learn, thus its name – play plus more.
Beyond the traditional cinema experience, GSC also operates Malaysia’s first-ever boutique cinema, GSC Signature, with Gold Class and Premiere Class halls in The Gardens Mall, KL. GSC also has offerings for smaller towns, introducing GSC Lite in 2012, which delivers convenience and accessibility without compromising big screen picture and high-quality digital audio available in urban city centres. A brand that embodies lighter, modest cinema entertainment, GSC Lite gives audiences a superior cinema experience at competitive pricing in market centres like Mentakab, Kuantan, Seremban, Sungai Petani, and Miri.
Innovations that deliver convenience
Beyond the silver screen, GSC has also been a pioneer in enhancing the customer cinema purchasing experience. In 2011, the GSC Mobile App was introduced to simplify the booking of movie tickets and popcorn combos on-the-go, enabling movie-goers to skip the queue. This ticketless option provides movie fans a QR code that they can then scan at auto-gates in the cinemas. Today, it is available on all major mobile platforms including iOS and Android, with payment via a diverse variety of options including Hong Leong Connect, Maybank2u, CIMB Clicks, RHB Now, PayPal, Visa Checkout, AMEX, or credit cards.
The e-Kiosk facility was then introduced in 2017, giving customers at GSC the added convenience of a self-checkout on-site. After making payment to the e-Kiosk, cinema-goers will receive a barcode receipt that can be scanned at the auto-gate for quick entry into the cinema halls.
To cater to corporate loyalty programmes and promotions, GSC introduced an innovative e-Voucher facility in 2012 that eliminates manual distribution of physical vouchers. With an e-Voucher, customers can conveniently redeem their tickets via GSC’s website or mobile app.
More than movies
More than just tech, GSC understands that content is what makes the cinema. This is why in 1999, GSC launched International Screens, a brand dedicated to arthouse, award-winning, non-mainstream, and foreign language films. Available in selected cinemas, International Screens has since expanded to include other content such as concerts, anime, sports, and more, kicking off with “Coldplay Live” in 2012.
Beyond the movies, GSC halls are also a preferred venue for many gala premieres, press conferences, product launches, and seminars, thanks to its cinemas being fully-equipped with innovative technologies that enable it to host both corporate and private events. GSC provides facilities such as comfortable seating, surround sound, and wide-screen digital projection for full audio-visual presentations. On top of that, its cinemas also offer a full-range of catering facilities and services for event organisers.
GSC received the Exhibitor of the Year award in CineAsia 2016. In 2017, GSC received its fourth consecutive Gold Award at the Putra Brand Awards, and was subsequently recognised as a Putra Brand Icon. For its efforts, 2018 saw GSC was also awarded Brand of the Year Award – National Tier (Malaysia) at the 2018 World Branding Award. Awarded by the World Branding Forum, the award is considered to be the ultimate celebration and acknowledgement of the best brands in the world.
