In Malaysia, GSC has 344 screens across 36 locations in Malaysia, including the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Ipoh, Seremban, Melaka, Kuantan, Mentakab, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, and Kuching. The Group also has 89 screens in 14 locations in Vietnam through a partnership with Galaxy Studio, which – combined with its operations in Malaysia – brings its footprint to a total of 433 screens in 50 locations across both countries.
GSC manages the largest multiplex in Southeast Asia – the 21-screen GSC Mid Valley Megamall, and also owns some of the largest cinema screens in the country with GSC Maxx, its proprietary premium large format screens, which are available in GSC MyTOWN, GSC IOI City Mall, GSC Ipoh Parade, and GSC Paradigm JB. GSC also operates Malaysia’s first-ever boutique cinema, GSC Signature, with Gold Class and Premiere Class halls in The Gardens Mall, KL.
GSC was the first cinema operator in Malaysia to feature ground-breaking audio surround technology, Dolby® Atmos™, which provides movie buffs a great sound and movie experience. The first ever Dolby® Atmos™ hall was launched in 2013 and is currently available in more than 20 GSC locations.
GSC launched the country’s first D-BOX motion seats, offering perfectly synchronized motions with movie scenes, at GSC 1 Utama in 2014. The feature has since been extended to over 12 cinemas nationwide. In 2017, GSC also introduced the world’s leading 4D cinematic technology, 4DX in GSC Paradigm JB. Developed by South Korea’s CJ 4DPLEX, 4DX brings the movies to life with over 20 signature effects delivered through vibration and motion-activated seats, as well as environmental effects like wind, fog, rain, lightning, and scents, all of which work together cohesively to deliver a multi-sensory experience. 4DX is now also available in GSC 1 Utama Shopping Centre and will soon be available in GSC IOI City Mall, Putrajaya as well as GSC Southkey, Johor Bahru.
In line with its commitment to continuously innovate and reinvent the way customers experience the magic of the movies, GSC has recently launched the Onyx Cinema LED screen –a first in the country. Onyx Cinema LED can showcase greater detail and colour vibrancy in cutting-edge 4K, and is even capable of capturing the most pristine whites and deepest blacks with a nearly infinite contrast ratio.
In 2019, GSC will introduce the country's first ScreenX theatre – a multi-projection theatre that allows a 270-degree panoramic movie experience. By utilising a proprietary system to expand the screen to the side walls, audiences can go beyond the traditional frame with surrounding imagery that gives a sense of being inside the movie.
In 2012, GSC Lite was introduced at selected locations in smaller towns, offering convenience and accessibility without compromising big screen picture and high-quality digital audio available in urban city centres. A brand that embodies lighter, modest cinema entertainment, GSC Lite gives audiences a superior cinema experience at competitive pricing in market centres like Mentakab, Kuantan, Seremban, Sungai Petani, and Miri.
The GSC Mobile App was introduced in 2011 and is available on all major mobile platforms including iOS and Android. Movie-goers can now skip the queue and waiting times, booking movie tickets and popcorn combos on-the-go with their smartphones. Payment is easy with Hong Leong Connect, Maybank2u, CIMB Clicks, RHB Now, PayPal, Visa Checkout, AMEX, or credit cards. This ticketless option provides movie fans a QR code that they can then scan at auto-gates in the cinemas.
The e-Kiosk facility was introduced in 2017, giving customers at GSC the added convenience of a self-checkout on-site. After making payment to the e-Kiosk, cinema-goers will receive a barcode receipt that can be scanned at the auto-gate for quick entry into the cinema halls.
To cater to corporate loyalty programmes and promotions, GSC introduced an innovative e-Voucher facility in 2012 that eliminates manual distribution of physical vouchers. With an e-Voucher, customers can conveniently redeem their tickets via GSC’s website or mobile app.
In 1999, GSC launched International Screens, a brand dedicated to arthouse, award-winning, non-mainstream, and foreign language films. Available in selected cinemas, International Screens has since expanded to include other content such as concerts, anime, sports, and more, kicking off with “Coldplay Live” in 2012.
Besides movies, GSC halls are also fully-equipped with innovative technologies to host both corporate and private events such as gala premieres, press conferences, product launches, and seminars. GSC provides facilities such as comfortable seating, surround sound, and wide-screen digital projection for full audio-visual presentations. On top of that, its cinemas also offer a full-range of catering facilities and services for event organisers.
GSC received the Exhibitor of the Year award in CineAsia 2016. In 2017, GSC received its fourth consecutive Gold Award at the Putra Brand Awards, and was subsequently recognised as a Putra Brand Icon. For its efforts, 2018 saw GSC was also awarded Brand of the Year Award – National Tier (Malaysia) at the 2018 World Branding Award. Awarded by the World Branding Forum, the award is considered to be the ultimate celebration and acknowledgement of the best brands in the world.
