Protecting the environment
PPB recognises that responsible use of resources is essential for long-term business resilience and strives to operate responsibly with consideration for the environment and the surrounding communities. Climate change, water conservation, waste and materials are three key focus areas.
CLIMATE CHANGE
Annual Target: Reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 8.7%, targeting a 42% reduction by 2030, from a 2024 baseline
Recognising climate change as a critical global challenge, PPB Group integrates mitigation and adaptation strategies across its business segments. Our strategy is anchored by a Decarbonization Roadmap that supports Malaysia’s Net Zero 2050 ambition through measurable emissions reduction targets.
PPB’s climate strategy is guided by its Climate Change Policy, which focuses on both mitigation and adaptation. This includes expanding the use of renewable energy and driving continuous improvements in energy efficiency.
The Group reports its climate-related risks and opportunities in accordance with IFRS S2 and incorporates climate-related risks into its Group Enterprise Risk Management framework. Oversight of climate-related matters is anchored at the Board level through established governance structures.
The Group has developed a decarbonisation roadmap based on its 2024 Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions baseline. This roadmap outlines a clear and time‑bound transition plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The transition plan prioritises renewable energy adoption as the primary reduction lever, while strengthening readiness for future Scope 3 disclosures in line with IFRS S2.
WATER CONSERVATION
Annual Target: Achieve water intensity targets set for livestock farming and properties
The efficient use of water and responsible effluent management remains a material topic for the Group, particularly for businesses with higher water footprints. Our operations continuously monitor water consumption and ensure that all effluents remain within prescribed legal limits. Prior to discharge, effluents undergo rigorous treatment to ensure full regulatory compliance and to minimise environmental impact.
Beyond our operational boundaries, PPB is also committed to supporting community access to clean and reliable water. Through our CSR initiatives, we support Orang Asli communities strengthen their water resilience by constructing rainwater harvesting tank and installing wells for daily use. These efforts reflect our belief that responsible water stewardship must extend not only to our business operations but also to the wellbeing of the communities in which we operate.
WASTE AND MATERIALS
The Group adopts a hierarchical waste management approach, prioritising reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery over disposal whenever feasible. This commitment demonstrates a practical approach to minimising environmental impact and optimising resource efficiency.
The Group continues to explore ways to reduce plastic use, improve efficiency, and minimise waste while ensuring food remains safe for consumption. The Italian Baker Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary under the Consumer Products segment, has taken steps to minimise plastic usage in its packaging. The company transitioned from conventional 30µm film packaging to a thinner 25µm alternative through a gradual rollout starting in 2022. This highlights how product packaging design can drive sustainable practices across the entire lifecycle of the product without compromising product integrity.
Within our properties segment, retail outlets are equipped with a recycling facility and GSC further supported this agenda by initiating PET bottle recycling drives and an innovative programme to upcycle used projector screens, reinforcing our commitment to circular economy.
